In 1958, 26-year-old minister David Wilkerson read about a New York gang homicide case in Life Magazine and felt obligated by faith to aid. He ventured to Manhattan to communicate the Gospel with the accused but was removed from the courtroom, earning news as the “Bible Preacher.” Seeing the destruction of substances on youth, he created Teen Challenge in 1960 to assist gang members and addicts through God’s life-changing strength. His 1962 book, The Cross and the Switchblade, has distributed over 16 million copies and was converted into a 1972 film. Teen Challenge has since expanded into a global Christian rehab network, including Great Lakes Adult & Teen Challenge, offering faith-based addiction recovery for men, women, and teens.
