In 1958, 26-year-old preacher David Wilkerson read about a New York gang murder case in Life Magazine and felt compelled by conviction to assist. He ventured to Manhattan to share the Gospel with the accused but was removed from the court, earning headlines as the “Bible Preacher.” Seeing the destruction of substances on adolescents, he founded Teen Challenge in 1960 to connect with gang members and addicts through God’s transformative strength. His 1962 book, The Cross and the Switchblade, has distributed over 16 million copies and was converted into a 1972 movie.
