In 1958, 26-year-old minister David Wilkerson read about a New York gang killing case in Life Magazine and felt compelled by conviction to assist. He ventured to Manhattan to spread the Gospel with the accused but was expelled from the courtroom, earning headlines as the “Bible Preacher.” Seeing the destruction of narcotics on adolescents, he founded Teen Challenge in 1960 to assist gang members and addicts through God’s miraculous force. His 1962 publication, The Cross and the Switchblade, has distributed over 16 million copies and was converted into a 1972 movie. Teen Challenge has since expanded into a global Christian rehab network, including Great Lakes Adult & Teen Challenge, offering faith-based addiction recovery for men, women, and teens.
