In 1958, 26-year-old minister David Wilkerson read about a New York gang killing trial in Life Magazine and felt obligated by conviction to help. He journeyed to Manhattan to share the Gospel with the accused but was ejected from the court, earning publicity as the “Bible Preacher.” Seeing the ruin of substances on teens, he founded Teen Challenge in 1960 to reach gang members and addicts through God’s miraculous power. His 1962 novel, The Cross and the Switchblade, has sold over 16 million copies and was modified into a 1972 film. Teen Challenge has since expanded into a global Christian rehab network, including Great Lakes Adult & Teen Challenge, offering faith-based addiction recovery for men, women, and teens.
