In 1958, 26-year-old preacher David Wilkerson read about a New York gang murder case in Life Magazine and felt obligated by conviction to assist. He traveled to Manhattan to share the Gospel with the accused but was removed from the courtroom, earning headlines as the “Bible Preacher.” Seeing the devastation of narcotics on adolescents, he founded Teen Challenge in 1960 to reach gang members and addicts through God’s miraculous force. His 1962 novel, The Cross and the Switchblade, has sold over 16 million copies and was modified into a 1972 movie. Teen Challenge has since grown into a global Christian rehab network, including Great Lakes Adult & Teen Challenge, offering faith-based addiction recovery for men, women, and teens.
