In 1958, 26-year-old minister David Wilkerson read about a New York gang homicide trial in Life Magazine and felt obligated by conviction to aid. He journeyed to Manhattan to spread the Gospel with the respondents but was removed from the court, earning headlines as the “Bible Preacher.” Seeing the devastation of narcotics on teens, he founded Teen Challenge in 1960 to assist gang members and addicts through God’s life-changing strength. His 1962 novel, The Cross and the Switchblade, has distributed over 16 million copies and was adapted into a 1972 movie. Teen Challenge has since grown into a global Christian rehab network, including Great Lakes Adult & Teen Challenge, offering faith-based addiction recovery for men, women, and teens.
