In 1958, 26-year-old preacher David Wilkerson read about a New York gang killing case in Life Magazine and felt driven by conviction to aid. He traveled to Manhattan to spread the Gospel with the accused but was ejected from the court, earning headlines as the “Bible Preacher.” Seeing the destruction of drugs on teens, he established Teen Challenge in 1960 to assist gang members and addicts through God’s miraculous strength. His 1962 publication, The Cross and the Switchblade, has sold over 16 million copies and was converted into a 1972 movie.
