In 1958, 26-year-old preacher David Wilkerson read about a New York gang killing trial in Life Magazine and felt compelled by conviction to aid. He ventured to Manhattan to communicate the Gospel with the defendants but was expelled from the courtroom, earning headlines as the “Bible Preacher.” Seeing the devastation of narcotics on adolescents, he established Teen Challenge in 1960 to connect with gang members and substance abusers through God’s life-changing power. His 1962 book, The Cross and the Switchblade, has circulated over 16 million copies and was adapted into a 1972 film. Teen Challenge has since evolved into a global Christian rehab network, including Great Lakes Adult & Teen Challenge, offering faith-based addiction recovery for men, women, and teens.
