In 1958, 26-year-old preacher David Wilkerson read about a New York gang homicide case in Life Magazine and felt obligated by conviction to aid. He ventured to Manhattan to share the Gospel with the defendants but was expelled from the court, earning headlines as the “Bible Preacher.” Seeing the destruction of drugs on adolescents, he founded Teen Challenge in 1960 to reach gang members and substance abusers through God’s miraculous power. His 1962 novel, The Cross and the Switchblade, has distributed over 16 million copies and was adapted into a 1972 film. Teen Challenge has since evolved into a global Christian rehab network, including Great Lakes Adult & Teen Challenge, offering faith-based addiction recovery for men, women, and teens.
