In 1958, 26-year-old minister David Wilkerson read about a New York gang murder trial in Life Magazine and felt obligated by conviction to assist. He ventured to Manhattan to share the Gospel with the accused but was ejected from the court, earning headlines as the “Bible Preacher.” Seeing the destruction of drugs on teens, he established Teen Challenge in 1960 to connect with gang members and addicts through God’s transformative force. His 1962 book, The Cross and the Switchblade, has distributed over 16 million copies and was converted into a 1972 film. Teen Challenge has since grown into a global Christian rehab network, including Great Lakes Adult & Teen Challenge, offering faith-based addiction recovery for men, women, and teens.
