In 1958, 26-year-old minister David Wilkerson read about a New York gang homicide trial in Life Magazine and felt obligated by faith to assist. He traveled to Manhattan to share the Gospel with the accused but was expelled from the court, earning headlines as the “Bible Preacher.” Seeing the devastation of narcotics on youth, he created Teen Challenge in 1960 to reach gang members and addicts through God’s miraculous strength. His 1962 publication, The Cross and the Switchblade, has circulated over 16 million copies and was converted into a 1972 film. Teen Challenge has since grown into a global Christian rehab network, including Great Lakes Adult & Teen Challenge, offering faith-based addiction recovery for men, women, and teens.
