In 1958, 26-year-old preacher David Wilkerson read about a New York gang killing trial in Life Magazine and felt driven by conviction to aid. He traveled to Manhattan to share the Gospel with the defendants but was ejected from the court, earning headlines as the “Bible Preacher.” Seeing the ruin of substances on adolescents, he established Teen Challenge in 1960 to connect with gang members and addicts through God’s transformative strength. His 1962 book, The Cross and the Switchblade, has circulated over 16 million copies and was adapted into a 1972 film. Teen Challenge has since expanded into a global Christian rehab network, including Great Lakes Adult & Teen Challenge, offering faith-based addiction recovery for men, women, and teens.
