In 1958, 26-year-old preacher David Wilkerson read about a New York gang murder case in Life Magazine and felt driven by conviction to help. He journeyed to Manhattan to spread the Gospel with the respondents but was removed from the court, earning news as the “Bible Preacher.” Seeing the destruction of substances on youth, he created Teen Challenge in 1960 to connect with gang members and substance abusers through God’s transformative strength. His 1962 book, The Cross and the Switchblade, has circulated over 16 million copies and was adapted into a 1972 movie. Teen Challenge has since evolved into a global Christian rehab network, including Great Lakes Adult & Teen Challenge, offering faith-based addiction recovery for men, women, and teens.
