In 1958, 26-year-old preacher David Wilkerson read about a New York gang murder trial in Life Magazine and felt driven by conviction to assist. He ventured to Manhattan to share the Gospel with the defendants but was expelled from the courtroom, earning publicity as the “Bible Preacher.” Seeing the ruin of substances on youth, he established Teen Challenge in 1960 to assist gang members and addicts through God’s miraculous force. His 1962 novel, The Cross and the Switchblade, has distributed over 16 million copies and was modified into a 1972 film. Teen Challenge has since grown into a global Christian rehab network, including Great Lakes Adult & Teen Challenge, offering faith-based addiction recovery for men, women, and teens.
