How Did Great Lakes Adult & Teen Challenge Begin?
Great Lakes Women’s Rehab is part of Great Lakes Adult & Teen Challenge, a Christian recovery ministry with roots that reach back to the founding of Teen Challenge in Brooklyn, New York, in 1958. Since then, Adult & Teen Challenge has grown into an international network of faith-based programs serving individuals and families affected by substance abuse and other life-controlling issues. In the Milwaukee area, Great Lakes Adult & Teen Challenge has served men and women for decades through long-term residential recovery, Christian discipleship, practical life-skills development, vocational training, and community support.
How Did Great Lakes Adult & Teen Challenge Begin?
The history of Adult & Teen Challenge began in 1958 when Rev. David Wilkerson began ministering to young people in New York City. That work eventually grew into a broader Christian recovery ministry focused on helping people facing substance abuse and other life-controlling issues find hope, structure, purpose, and spiritual renewal.
Over time, Adult & Teen Challenge expanded into communities across the United States and around the world. Great Lakes Adult & Teen Challenge became part of that broader mission by developing residential recovery programs in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area.
When Did Adult & Teen Challenge Begin Serving Milwaukee?
The roots of Great Lakes Adult & Teen Challenge in Milwaukee date back to 1983, when local business leaders and ministers began meeting to address the need for Christ-centered recovery support in the community.
In 1989, the ministry opened its first adult residential recovery program. Within several years, supporters helped secure the resources needed to purchase a former nursing home facility, which became the Men’s Center of Hope.
That facility became an important foundation for the continued growth of Great Lakes Adult & Teen Challenge and its residential recovery ministries in southeastern Wisconsin.
How Did the Great Lakes Vehicle Donation Program Begin?
In 2002, Great Lakes Adult & Teen Challenge acquired the car lot located next to its Milwaukee facility and developed a Vehicle Donation Program.
The program has helped support the ministry while also creating opportunities for participants to build practical work habits, develop vocational skills, and experience structured responsibility as part of the recovery process.
When Did Great Lakes Women’s Rehab Begin?
Great Lakes Women’s Rehab began serving women in 1999 through a Christ-centered residential recovery program. The ministry initially used the former New Life for Girls Home in Waukesha, Wisconsin.
In 2001, support from the Fleck Foundation helped provide a new building for the women’s program. The facility, named the Robby Dawson Home for Women, was created to provide a safe and structured residential environment for women seeking freedom from substance abuse and other life-controlling issues.
Since that time, Great Lakes Women’s Rehab has continued to provide long-term Christian residential recovery focused on spiritual growth, personal responsibility, life skills, vocational development, and restored relationships.
How Have the Great Lakes Men’s and Women’s Programs Grown?
As the ministry developed, Great Lakes Adult & Teen Challenge continued to strengthen its residential programs, vocational opportunities, facilities, and community partnerships.
In 2003, the organization worked with ministry development professionals to strengthen its long-term vision and planning. Over the following years, support from churches, donors, businesses, volunteers, and community partners helped the programs expand their capacity to serve men and women seeking recovery.
In 2017, Great Lakes Adult & Teen Challenge opened its Super Thrift Store. The store supports the ministry while providing additional vocational and work-training opportunities for program participants.

Today, Great Lakes Adult & Teen Challenge continues to serve men and women who are seeking freedom from substance abuse and other life-controlling issues through a long-term, Christ-centered residential recovery model.
